I made a short list of music schools in the Philippines that offer music lessons: piano, voice, violin, drums for children and adults. Yamaha comes up often because it has the most number of entries on this directory.
From what I ‘ve seen so far, UP Conservatory of Music and UST Conservatory of Music graduates seem to be sought after teachers for music lessons. Both are known centers for excellence.
One very good advice I got from my son’s music teacher to find out whether the music school you’re enrolling invests in conversatory of music graduates. The quality of the teachers do MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
I chose my music school based on location, took into consideration, the fact that my son’s teacher is a UP Conservatory of Music graduate. So far my boys have been very happy, we were lucky to get a kind and patient teacher.

The school doesn’t really matter. It’s more of the teacher that does. Unfortunately, my son’s piano teacher decided to go into another line of work so he has cut down his hours of piano lessons .
It would be wise to ask about the credentials of the teacher who is handling the course. I will always go for the teachers who graduate from UP or UST conservatory of music.
: ) I usually like smaller establishments, they’re usually more personal. Personally, I don’t go for the commercial schools. It’s your choice really, but it helps to get a school near your place of residence so the travel time doesn’t have to be factored in.

I ‘ve been so busy lately with my kids that I haven’t gotten to fully updating the website. : ) Have you bought a violin yet? There’s a nice little cluster of stores along Aurora blvd san juan that sell guitars and violins. I was able to purchase one for about 2000php. I haven’t gotten my son enrolled in violin, because it’s better that the child has a good background in piano before he starts the violin and usually better around 5 to 6 years of age. : )

Hi! My son is able to play the violin without having to learn the piano…he started at 8…and now is 10…I guess it depends on the child…but no, you don’t have to learn piano first.
It’s a matter of being able to read notes and where the fingers are to be placed which is totally different from the piano keys

I think you may want to check with St. Mary ‘s in Mother Ignacia QC, I think they also offer drum lessons if I’m not mistaken, but am not sure of the rates, according to a mom I spoke in passing with, it’s affordable.
I suggest you scout around and interview the background of the teachers. You can be lucky and get ones as hardworking as those who taught my kids were, but you can also get one who literally “falls” asleep at the piano so to speak which is also why my cousin left one of the schools on this list and moved to another school on the list.
But in the end, it’s not the school. It’s the teacher. So, I don’t want to mention establishment names, one bad apple in a pile of good ones – doesn’t mean that everyone there is bad. : ) Good luck

My experience is that the smaller the establishment, usually the more personalized they are. You might want to call up Encore and interview the teacher. Call up Yamaha as well and interview the teacher. Ask if they are willing to do a trial lesson, if you’re comfortable with the teaching style, that’s the time you sign up. : )

please try calling the schools to inquire directly so you can ask other questions that concern you as well. If you can get a very good teacher with very good
qualifications to give you private lessons that would be good, but from experience private lessons are about php 500 per hour if they go to your house, so
it is much cheaper to have piano lessons at a center.

I think it’s best that you pick a school that’s close to where you live. No. 2. Find out the background of your teacher and where he/she studied. No.3 Bring your child to meet the teacher. See if your child has rapport with the teacher. No.4 Before you sign up, ask for a trial lesson and see if your child likes it or not. No.5 Take note of how the teacher teaches your child, does he or she teach the subject well.
I can only give you tips as it is teachers that make the school. And getting good teachers should be the no. 1 priority : )
Maybe I will enroll in Yamaha School of Music there in Megamall. The only branch that is near in our house. May itatanong lang po ako. Alam ko pong hindi ‘to konektado sa mga nilista niyo. Meron po ba kayong alam na dance school na nagtuturo ng hip-hop at jazz na malapit po sa Mandaluyong. Balak ko po kasi pumasok ngayong magbabakasyon.

Philippine Allstars put the Philippines on the hip hop map. The place is filled during the summer, but it’s worth checking out. I just don’t know the number.

wow, thanks for the incredibly useful post 🙂 this certainly saved me a lot of time trying to sort out which school to pick. just to let anybody else who might be reading this know, I’ve just turned 27 and finally put my foot down on having a go at learning the violin 🙂 I know it’ll be a challenge, but personally I think it’s never too late to learn 🙂 all one needs is an open mind, patience, practice and a strong appreciation/passion for music to be able to pick up a new instrument and start to play.
I’ve been a fan of Heifetz, Milstein and Oistrakh for the longest time and have been listening to everything from Bach to Saint Saens to Shostakovich 🙂 I only wish everyone else past their 20’s who wants to learn to play actually decides to go for it as well! It’s never too late, to be sure. Learning to play Bach’s ciaccona is a feat in itself, but definitely a feat worth attempting!

I think you should try calling up the both centers and setting an appointment to visit and see how they train, let your son see for himself and that way he decides for himself.
It’s not really the school- but the quality of the teacher who will be teaching your son.

I thought I could ask few questions that would really encourage me to get into enrolling in violin lessons. Well, I am already at my mid 20s and just want to know what would be the possible challenges that I may confront at the start of the program. Second, how would you be able to cope with them all throughout the program. And lastly, what advices could you give to help me out in note reading before I start with a program. Thanks a lot.
Hi John, just remember that in whatever you do whether work or music- make sure that it is something you like to do and that you can imagine yourself working on for the next couple of years or so. Violin playing takes a lot of discipline and practice. One of my boys wanted to learn how to play the violin and pestered me to buy him a violin- which I did. When he decided that he didn’t want to continue his music lessons anymore because he decided that he liked singing better – I went and sold his violin. In same vein, when both my boys decided that piano was not for them, I didn’t pressure them to continue- it’s useless to spend money on someone who doesn’t have the desire to learn. But when I found out that they loved their math lessons- I diverted my funds there and let them continue doing what they wanted to do. They were happy and excited and nobody had to force them to do their work. Just my two cents.
KeyStrings Music is a newly opened Music School near Welcome Rotunda. Our teachers came from UST, UP, PWU and SIC. Although KeyStrings is a new name for a music school in Metro Manila, we have been teaching since 2002 through other music studios like Lyric and Yamaha. KeyStrings started in 2008 (without a name, and catering only to adult beginners) and birthed through a recital in 2010. Now, we have a new facility with additional courses like Drums, Guitar, Voice and Cello, plus our usual Piano and Violin. Our lessons can be individual or group (preferably for adults only).

Please check your teacher’s credentials. The school does not make the teacher. UST I think would have great teachers, you might want to check with the conservatory if they offer lessons.

Hi Mik, at 2 , your son might be too young for classical training. I think they prefer kids around 4 or 5 for that. But I think you can try suzuki method, but am not sure if they have a makati branch. they do have in CTEC Connecticut Greenhills. You will have to accompany your child I think and be his teacher as well for the Suzuki method to work effectively.

Hi Teng, for someone that young, you might want to look for Suzuki violin lessons, but you, of course, must have time to attend these lessons and teach your daughter as well. Traditional Violin is usually recommended for kids age 4 and above and requires a lifetime of practice in order to achieve mastery.
