Piano, Violin, Voice, and Drum Music Lessons in Metro Manila

on November 6, 2009

I made a short list of music schools in the Philippines that offer music lessons: piano, voice, violin, drums for children and adults. Yamaha comes up often because it has the most number of entries on this directory.

From what I ‘ve seen so far, UP Conservatory of Music and UST Conservatory of Music graduates seem to be sought after teachers for music lessons. Both are known centers for excellence.

One very good advice I got from my son’s music teacher to find out whether the music school you’re enrolling invests in conversatory of music graduates. The quality of the teachers do MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I chose my music school based on location, took into consideration, the fact that my son’s teacher is a UP Conservatory of Music graduate. So far my boys have been very happy, we were lucky to get a kind and patient teacher.

Enjoy!

  1. sputnik says:

Which school did you enroll your boys in? 🙂

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi sputnik,

The school doesn’t really matter. It’s more of the teacher that does. Unfortunately, my son’s piano teacher decided to go into another line of work so he has cut down his hours of piano lessons .

It would be wise to ask about the credentials of the teacher who is handling the course. I will always go for the teachers who graduate from UP or UST conservatory of music.

    • mymikhaela says:

: ) I usually like smaller establishments, they’re usually more personal. Personally, I don’t go for the commercial schools. It’s your choice really, but it helps to get a school near your place of residence so the travel time doesn’t have to be factored in.

  2. jennifer bernardo says:

Hi there..this is a very helpful page…i’m looking for a school to enroll at this coming summer in playing the violin…Big help 🙂 Thanks!

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Jennifer,

Thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate it, I’m glad to know that it has been of help. I ‘ve been so busy lately with my kids that I haven’t gotten to fully updating the website. : ) Have you bought a violin yet? There’s a nice little cluster of stores along Aurora blvd san juan that sell guitars and violins. I was able to purchase one for about 2000php. I haven’t gotten my son enrolled in violin, because it’s better that the child has a good background in piano before he starts the violin and usually better around 5 to 6 years of age. : )

      • jennifer bernardo says:

Hi..yah..it’s really a big help…ahm..actually, i’ve been playing the violin for a few years now..but i can say that I haven’t learned much yet because I want to experience a formal type of lessons…i took lessons here in pangasinan but i’d really like to experience there in manila too..this summer, I’m going to have my ojt and i’d like to take violin lessons at the same time..thank you for your blog..Good luck to your kids too…:-)

      • mymikhaela says:

Hi Jennifer, Good luck on your trip to manila and your violin playing. Just to let you know, the best musicians are the ones who practice the most number of hours. : ) thank you so much. : )

      • angelgabriel says:

Hi! My son is able to play the violin without having to learn the piano…he started at 8…and now is 10…I guess it depends on the child…but no, you don’t have to learn piano first.

It’s a matter of being able to read notes and where the fingers are to be placed which is totally different from the piano keys

thanks for the music studio info

      • mymikhaela says:

        Hi Angelgabriel,

Thanks for sharing. Your inputs are very much welcome. : )

      • mymikhaela says:

        Hi angelgabriel,

I do so agree with you.

  3. GEELYN says:

this is such a big help. THANK YOU!

  4. Carla says:

Hi, I want to learn how to play the violin or guitar. I need basic lessons on both. Do you schools offering saturdays and sunday classes? thanks.

  5. anj says:

hello there! thank u so much. this is exactly what i need but i’d like to get more help and if only among the listed schools, u could recommend me the best school so far for drumming lessons (qc area). i know the question sounds quite impossible but I really would like to enroll in a school that could offer max quality in a less than expensive cost as much as possible. if u need to answer confidentially because it might sound offensive to other schools, i hope u’d find time to email me (anje_drei@yahoo.com.ph). really hoping you’d read this and much more hoping you’d answer.tyvm

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Anj,

I think you may want to check with St. Mary ‘s in Mother Ignacia QC, I think they also offer drum lessons if I’m not mistaken, but am not sure of the rates, according to a mom I spoke in passing with, it’s affordable.
I suggest you scout around and interview the background of the teachers. You can be lucky and get ones as hardworking as those who taught my kids were, but you can also get one who literally “falls” asleep at the piano so to speak which is also why my cousin left one of the schools on this list and moved to another school on the list.

But in the end, it’s not the school. It’s the teacher. So, I don’t want to mention establishment names, one bad apple in a pile of good ones – doesn’t mean that everyone there is bad. : ) Good luck

  6. Al says:

I was currently looking for places where I could get voice lessons in the QC area and I came across your site. Very useful. Thank you 🙂

  7. Joe says:

    Hello there!

Thank you for the info! I’d long been searching for Piano/Keyboard Lessons around the Ortigas/Manila area, and thanks for pointing out the exact locations of the Yamaha studios around the area!

Just wanted to ask, would you recommend Yamaha? It seems to be a big extablishment, so I was thinking that Keyboard Lessons they offer might be a bit more expensive than usual.

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Joe,

You’re very much welcome. Am glad to hear that this list has been of much help.

My experience is that the smaller the establishment, usually the more personalized they are. You might want to call up Encore and interview the teacher. Call up Yamaha as well and interview the teacher. Ask if they are willing to do a trial lesson, if you’re comfortable with the teaching style, that’s the time you sign up. : )

  8. joseph says:

    hi!
u have such an informative blog here. thanks for mapping out the music schools there in manila. cant wait to find my chance on finally getting a violin lesson. i think UP college of music is a good place to start. 🙂 long live the love for music in your family.;)

  9. maria danella says:

Hi Very Good site but can you give me any violin lessons here in metro manila quezon city! lessons not school because my 10 yrs old daughter wants to practice violin she has a good background in the piano since she has piano lessons!

  10. ayn says:

    Hi,

Im very interested in learning the violi. Can I have an idea of how much it would cost me if I enrolled in a music school like Yamaha and or have private lessons instead. Im from makati by the way and it would be very convenient if the music studio would be in Makati also.
    Thanks so much!

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Ayn,

Please try calling the companies listed. Yamaha would probably have a bigger reach than the others.

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Ayn,

please try calling the schools to inquire directly so you can ask other questions that concern you as well. If you can get a very good teacher with very good
qualifications to give you private lessons that would be good, but from experience private lessons are about php 500 per hour if they go to your house, so

it is much cheaper to have piano lessons at a center.

  11. Kyon says:

Very useful site po. Ask ko lang po kung tama pa rin po yung mga contact details? Try ko po kasi sana tawagan tomorrow 😀

    Thanks

  12. rolyn says:

hello.i just want to ask if Ill still be able to learn how to play violin.im 21, but no one in our family is musically inclined,im a nursing student but Im into music and singing especially violin playing. i really want to learn playing it like a lot!!!!i envy people who knows how to play violin and piano..im from tacloban city and doesnt know places too much yet in manila..my main concern here is, can i still make it?to learn to play violin and piano?hope you’re kind enough to answer.thank you.

  13. sheriyll says:

hello there! what is the best program for my 4 y/old son,he loves music.which school is highly recommended for a pre schooler? thanks for the info.

    thank you-che

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Sheriyll,

I think it’s best that you pick a school that’s close to where you live. No. 2. Find out the background of your teacher and where he/she studied. No.3 Bring your child to meet the teacher. See if your child has rapport with the teacher. No.4 Before you sign up, ask for a trial lesson and see if your child likes it or not. No.5 Take note of how the teacher teaches your child, does he or she teach the subject well.

I can only give you tips as it is teachers that make the school. And getting good teachers should be the no. 1 priority : )

  14. Audrey Mae C. Yaneza says:

Maybe I will enroll in Yamaha School of Music there in Megamall. The only branch that is near in our house.

  15. liza says:

    hi,

    thanks!
nice webblog by the way =)

    • mymikhaela says:

Hi Liza, not really, the one I know is in Manila which is traffic and not easy to go to. I ‘m afraid I’m not so familiar with the Malate area. But thank you for the compliment : )

  18. rosie says:

i really like your blog, you helped me to choose and to decide for my little girl 😀 thank you very much. godbless 🙂

  19. Ish says:

Hi. Does MPO (Manila Philharmonic Orchestra) School of Music accept beginners in violin?

  20. AnnaBanana says:

wow, thanks for the incredibly useful post 🙂 this certainly saved me a lot of time trying to sort out which school to pick. just to let anybody else who might be reading this know, I’ve just turned 27 and finally put my foot down on having a go at learning the violin 🙂 I know it’ll be a challenge, but personally I think it’s never too late to learn 🙂 all one needs is an open mind, patience, practice and a strong appreciation/passion for music to be able to pick up a new instrument and start to play.
I’ve been a fan of Heifetz, Milstein and Oistrakh for the longest time and have been listening to everything from Bach to Saint Saens to Shostakovich 🙂 I only wish everyone else past their 20’s who wants to learn to play actually decides to go for it as well! It’s never too late, to be sure. Learning to play Bach’s ciaccona is a feat in itself, but definitely a feat worth attempting!

I do want to learn violin & im searching for a cheaper but with quality school offering the service.Would you recommend a school for me?

    Thank you veryu much,

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Shirley,

please remember that it always boils down to the teacher. Interview and observe several teachers 1st. Take the time to visit the schools.

  25. khushnoor says:

Hi,My son is 15 years old and is a lead guitarist in his sch band.He is now showing interest in singing too. I wanted to know if there is any diff between voice training and plain singing classes. What will be more appropriate for him. Which acccording to you is better..Yamaha or Center for pop music?
    Thanks so much

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Khushnoor,

I think you should try calling up the both centers and setting an appointment to visit and see how they train, let your son see for himself and that way he decides for himself.

It’s not really the school- but the quality of the teacher who will be teaching your son.

  26. John says:

Hi! I saw your page and was astound with how much people try to get involved into the discussion of music lessons. I thought I could ask few questions that would really encourage me to get into enrolling in violin lessons. Well, I am already at my mid 20s and just want to know what would be the possible challenges that I may confront at the start of the program. Second, how would you be able to cope with them all throughout the program. And lastly, what advices could you give to help me out in note reading before I start with a program. Thanks a lot.

    • mymikhaela says:

Hi John, just remember that in whatever you do whether work or music- make sure that it is something you like to do and that you can imagine yourself working on for the next couple of years or so. Violin playing takes a lot of discipline and practice. One of my boys wanted to learn how to play the violin and pestered me to buy him a violin- which I did. When he decided that he didn’t want to continue his music lessons anymore because he decided that he liked singing better – I went and sold his violin. In same vein, when both my boys decided that piano was not for them, I didn’t pressure them to continue- it’s useless to spend money on someone who doesn’t have the desire to learn. But when I found out that they loved their math lessons- I diverted my funds there and let them continue doing what they wanted to do. They were happy and excited and nobody had to force them to do their work. Just my two cents.

  27. KeyStrings Music is a newly opened Music School near Welcome Rotunda. Our teachers came from UST, UP, PWU and SIC. Although KeyStrings is a new name for a music school in Metro Manila, we have been teaching since 2002 through other music studios like Lyric and Yamaha. KeyStrings started in 2008 (without a name, and catering only to adult beginners) and birthed through a recital in 2010. Now, we have a new facility with additional courses like Drums, Guitar, Voice and Cello, plus our usual Piano and Violin. Our lessons can be individual or group (preferably for adults only).

I hope you can also include our school in your blog. 🙂 Thank you very much!

Please do check our website: http://keystringsmusic.com

  28. Jinky says:

Thank you so much for making this blog. =] Other than the World of Music Learning Center, can you suggest music schools around manila?

    • mymikhaela says:

Hi Ms. Jinky, unfortunately, I haven’t tried the other schools, but I think you should try to interview your potential teachers as to their musical background and course specialty.

  29. akire says:

hi there! nice blog you have here. its very informative. Can you give me your honest opinion on where i could go? I agree with you about the quality of the teachers and i prefer a smaller establishment near sta. cruz manila. I’m just a 25 yrs old nursing graduate and i’ve just been playing piano on my own at home. the hardest i could play is fur elise and hatinggabi. but i would like to play harder classic songs. its a hobby of mine and i want to really improve. it just makes me happy when i can finish my chosen pieces. thanks. i was undecided on both yamaha and lyric coz they are both large scale establishment. if i can, i would like a small quiet but somewhere they can help me improve.

    • mymikhaela says:

      Hi Akire,

Please check your teacher’s credentials. The school does not make the teacher. UST I think would have great teachers, you might want to check with the conservatory if they offer lessons.

  30. Mik says:

Hi, really appreciate this blog :). I have a 2-year old son who really loves to play his toy musical instruments (esp the violin) and loves to listen to vivaldi and mozart.

Do you think this can be a right time to start him in violin/piano lessons? Would you know any music school/music teacher here in Makati who accomodates 2-year old students 😉 ?

    • mymikhaela says:

Hi Mik, at 2 , your son might be too young for classical training. I think they prefer kids around 4 or 5 for that. But I think you can try suzuki method, but am not sure if they have a makati branch. they do have in CTEC Connecticut Greenhills. You will have to accompany your child I think and be his teacher as well for the Suzuki method to work effectively.

Hi how can I email you? I have some questions about violin and schools. Since I’m planning for my 2y/o daughter to enroll her in a violin lessons in near future. Everytime she saw someone playing violin she’s stunned. 🙂 thanks

    • mymikhaela says:

Hi Teng, for someone that young, you might want to look for Suzuki violin lessons, but you, of course, must have time to attend these lessons and teach your daughter as well. Traditional Violin is usually recommended for kids age 4 and above and requires a lifetime of practice in order to achieve mastery.
